In the summer traffic jams are the inevitable result of construction and road closures and TTC closures for maintenance. With a little advance warning and planning you can avoid the worst of it.
TTC Planned Closures
The Toronto Transit Commission typically does work at night so as to not disrupt service. However, weekend closures will continue so improvements to infrastructure and signals can be completed. Though it is an inconvenience to the general population, it drastically reduces the length of time it will take to complete necessary maintenance, repairs, and improvements. Likewise, roads must be closed periodically to allow for construction and maintenance.
The following is a list of known Toronto Transit Commission closures throughout the remainder of the year:
Bloor-Yonge to Lawrence
Southbound trains on Line 1 will turn back at Lawrence Station, and northbound trains will turn back at Bloor-Yonge Station. Commuters will have access to shuttles between Lawrence and Bloor-Yonge during the closure, taking place on July 8th and 9th.
Jane to Ossington
Wheel-Trans buses will be available to commuters travelling between Jane and Ossington stations, as subway service between these stations will be closed on July 15th and 16th. If you are interested in using the Wheel-Trans system, contact TTC staff to request the service.
St George to Broadview
No subway service will be available between St. George and Broadview stations on July 22nd and 23rd. The closures will be in effects as a result of work on the Prince Edward Viaduct and Toronto Transit Commission maintenance. Commuters will have access to shuttles and Wheel-Trans buses during the closures. Subsequent closures will occur on August 26th-27th.
Sheppard West to St George
Subway service between Sheppard West and St George stations will be closed on several occasions due to signal upgrades. Shuttles will be available as an alternative. These closures will take place on July 29th-30th and August 12th-13th.
Kipling to Islington
Service between Kipling and Islington stations will close on August 19th-20th for track work. According to the Toronto Transit Commission, commuters “travelling westbound on Line 2 who require an elevator should exit the train at Jane Station and speak to any TTC staff member to request the Wheel-Trans bus.”
McCowan to Kennedy
Line 3 Scarborough will be closed between McCowan and Kennedy stations on August 27th due to infrastructure work. As with other closures, travelers can speak with TTC staff to request Wheel-Trans services.
