Toronto architect gives Saint Petersburg a new opera house

Architecture, perhaps more than any other of the arts, has the power to inflame the passions. No doubt it is the public nature of the art form that makes it so open to attack—and praise—from any passerby. Toronto’s Jack Diamond of Diamond Schmitt Architects, is acutely aware of this at this moment. His latest creation, a new opera-ballet house bearing the legendary name Mariinsky, will open with a glamorous gala concert on May 2 in Saint Petersburg, Russia, and there have been many nasty comments about his work.
